“The most profound choices of my life,” Jensen McRae says, “have often felt like things I did before I was ready, and I had to grow into them.” Her new album, I Don’t Know How But They Found Me!, marks a leap from promising artist to fully evolved star. McRae explores themes of love, intimacy, and resilience, recognizing that some things you can’t outrun—“you can never leave yourself.”
Her first album, Are You Happy Now?, introduced McRae as a Black Jewish folk artist, carving a space against expectations. On her new album, McRae tackles her evolving relationships and growing audience. “I had never been in love before,” she shares, “and then I had two life-altering relationships.” The album explores how love can knock you off your feet, all while gaining viral traction, including a 2023 post of “Massachusetts.”
McRae’s voice is multidimensional, capable of heartbreak and power. “Savannah” showcases her forceful delivery, while “Let Me Be Wrong” celebrates rejecting perfectionism. Tracks like “Daffodils” and “Tuesday” delve into abuse and trauma within relationships. “Mother Wound” reflects on emotional unavailability, with McRae singing, “Loving you lowered my expectations.”
Despite the darkness, the album has moments of light, such as “T. Rearranger” and “Novelty,” which infuse nostalgia and allure. I Don’t Know How But They Found Me! is a collection of urgent songs marked by McRae’s sharp lyrics and pop melodies. The title, inspired by Back to the Future, echoes her personal resilience—she made it through, bulletproof the whole time.
